The access audit · Screenwriters

How a screenplay actually reaches a buyer

Every screenwriter is told to write a great script and the rest follows. The rest does not follow from the script. It follows from whether anyone was already oriented toward you when it arrived.

Two questions · free · nothing you enter about your routes leaves your browser

Every route that brings attention to your work is one of three things, and two questions asked in order tell you which.

Question one

When someone shows up here, had they already chosen you?

If no, stop. The route is contested and question two does not apply. Coordinates you hold for people who never chose you are not a direct route.

Question two

Could you reach them again without this intermediary choosing you again?

Yes is direct. No is rented. Ordinary infrastructure you can replace does not count as a landlord.

The routes in this field

Sorted by the two questions. Yours will differ — this is the shape of the reasoning, not a verdict on your career.

A cold query to an agency or management companyContested

Nobody asked for it. It arrives alongside everything else that arrived that week.

A high score or list placement on Coverfly, the Black List or a contestRented

The platform conferred a floor and its standing carried you. The platform controls whether it happens again.

A referral from a working writer or a producer you knowRented

Their trust transferred to you, which is exactly what conferral is. You cannot re-issue it yourself.

A manager or agent submitting you for open writing assignmentsRented

You were chosen, and the route to the buyer runs entirely through your representation.

A producer who has made your work and calls you about the next oneDirect

They chose you, and you can start the next conversation yourself.

Writers who know your work and recommend you unpromptedDirect

A relationship you hold, not one an intermediary is administering.

Cold outreach to producers from a public databaseContested

You hold the address. Nobody on the other end was waiting for it.

A staffing meeting your agent arrangedRented

Real access, wholly dependent on the agency continuing to spend its standing on you.

Three worked examples

An unsolicited query into the general submissions inboxContested
A referral that puts your script at the top of the reading pileRented

The referral is the whole mechanism, and it is the clearest case in the framework: somebody else's accumulated trust is being spent on you. It works because it is theirs, which is also why you cannot spend it again yourself.

A producer who optioned your last script and asks what you are writing nowDirect

Three questions for the rented routes

The audit places a route. It does not price one. For anything that came out rented — in this field that is usually your representation, or the platform that ranked you — the next questions are:

  1. What do you have to keep paying, or pay again, to keep the access? Money, cadence, format, exclusivity, availability, deference to a house style, or changes to the work.
  2. Who can change or end the delivery? And what recourse do you have — a contract, a union, a negotiation, or nothing.
  3. If it closed tomorrow, what could you carry elsewhere? Not just a file. Whether the permission, the context and the ability to actually reach people survive the move.

Post-strike, buyers are reported to want scripts ready to go rather than projects to develop, which raises what a rented route is worth and does not change who controls it.

No position is better than another. A career can run well on any mix, and many run mostly on rented routes by choice. The audit does not tell you to leave anything. It tells you what you are standing on, so the choice is a decision rather than a default.

What this cannot tell you

It places your routes. It does not measure your career. It cannot see the quality of your work, your income, your craft, your credits or your reputation — and rented routes build all of those, even when they build no way back to anyone.

Run it on your own routes → The printable one-pager

Want the one-pager in your inbox?

It is free above and needs no address. If it is more useful sitting in your email than in a tab you will close, leave one and I will send it — along with new instruments as they go up, what I learn from running them, and sometimes something I am selling.

No schedule and no newsletter — usually one email a month or less, occasionally a short run when something launches, then quiet again. One click to leave, and the definitions stay free either way.

The underlying idea — that attention arrives contested, rented or direct — is free to use, adapt and teach. If this is wrong about your situation, that is worth more to me than if it is right: the contact is on the about page.
