The access audit · field by field

The same two questions, in the field you actually work in

Every route that brings attention to your work is contested, rented or direct. The questions are identical everywhere. The routes are not.

The interactive audit works for anyone who makes something. These pages do the sorting for you first, using the routes that actually exist in one field — so you can see where yours land before you run it.

ActorsBeing thought of is real conferral. The dependency is that the route back runs through people who can stop choosing you, often without telling you. ScreenwritersA referral goes to the top of the reading pile. That is conferral doing its work — and it is somebody else's to give. MusiciansA large streaming number and a small direct one is a common shape. It is not a failure — it does mean the routes carrying the volume are not the routes you could move. AuthorsA publisher's readers are the publisher's. That is not a complaint about publishing — it is the thing to know before you plan around them. Visual artistsA gallery confers standing you could not confer on yourself. It also holds the relationship with the people who buy. Job seekersApplying is the contested route and it is the one everyone spends their time on. That is the finding, not the advice.

The two questions

One: when someone shows up here, had they already chosen you? If no, the route is contested and the second question does not apply.

Two: could you reach them again without this intermediary choosing you again? Yes is direct. No is rented.

That order is the whole method. Coordinates you hold for people who never chose you — a purchased list, a scraped contact, a room you can shout into — are not a direct route. They are a contested one you happen to have the address for.

Your field is not here

The questions still work. Run the audit on your own routes, or take the printable one-pager and do it on paper. If there is a field worth adding, the contact is on the about page — the ones that get built are the ones people ask for.
