Conferral Theory · Granted Attention

Did they choose you, or did you have to win them?

Attention you were given and attention you took are two different assets, and many people never keep them on separate lines. So they optimise the number that is hardest to move, and neglect the one they can.

Why the difference is the whole thing

Three routes. They differ in what they accumulate — and in whether you can start the next conversation without asking anyone.

A rented route can be withdrawn without notice. The audience is real and the leverage is often excellent. The address is not yours. When the intermediary changes what it shows, nothing about your work changed and everything about your reach did.
A contested route has to be re-won every time. The effort that brought the tenth arrival buys you no claim on the eleventh. Plenty else accumulates — income, craft, credits, reputation — and for some fields this is simply the shape of the job. What does not accumulate is a way back to the people it reached.
A direct route is the one you can act on without asking. It is the route that survives a decision you did not make. That is why every instrument here sorts for it first — not because the other two are worth less, but because this is the one whose terms are yours.
